Blending for Beginners -
The Art of Pairing Diffuser Oils

The great thing about essential oils is that you can blend different fragrances to create a specific scent that best fits your preference. However, blending oils can be quite intimidating, especially if you're a beginner.

Because of the colourful array of oils in the market today, you can get lost in the blending process, and you might even have trouble at first. Whatever reason you have for blending oils, such as creating the perfect scent for your diffuser, there is a mixture of things you need to bear in mind.

If you're ready to learn the art of pairing diffuser oils to create that specific scent you've been searching for, stick around. Here's our beginner's guide to blending essential oils.

Step #1: Know What You Want

Just like any creative project, when you're blending oils, you also need to have an end goal. You can identify what you're looking for by asking yourself who the blend is for, what effect you want it to have, and where it will be used.

Knowing the answers to those questions will give you a great headstart to your blending process. This is because you'll be able to identify the specific scent the person enjoys, you'll have an idea of what you want them to feel.

This makes it easier to complement the blend with the mood you want to create in your living space.

Step #2: Know the Essential Oils You Want to Work With

The next thing you want to do and perhaps the most crucial step of the whole process is this: choosing the right oils to work with. Unfortunately, you can't just go through your cupboard and grab any essential oil your hand touches; you need to understand each of their properties and their notable characteristics.

When you're working with essential oils, it helps to know their scientific name so that you can research their properties and benefits. Knowing this will help you create a blend that will give you the desired effect you want to achieve.

Next, you want to consider their notable characteristics, such as their aromas and what categories they fall into. This will help you determine the right fragrance oils that would work together to create a specific scent.

For example, citrus, earthy, and spicy oils work well together to give you a cozier and warm feel in your living space.

Step #3: Balance Your Blends

Blending oils is more than just dropping an "x" amount of drops of fragrance oil in the container — there's a science behind the blending process.

Essential oil notes rely heavily on a musical scale referred to as the top notes, middle notes, and base notes. These notes determine how quickly the scent fades after exposure to oxygen.
• Top notes: The lightest notes in your blend and the first aromas you smell are the top notes. These notes often have a thin consistency and are usually derived from florals, herbs, and leaves.
• Base notes: These heavy and deep scents ground your blend and help your oils' aroma last longer. These notes are often derived from earthy scents, like roots, trees, barks, and more.
• Middle notes: The notes that tie your blends together are the middle notes. Basically, these notes harmonise your top and base notes, giving it a lingering pleasant experience.

Step #4: Let It Breathe and Test Your Blends

Now that you've properly ratioed your scents and have a lovely balance of aromas, you should let your blends rest for about 24 hours. And once the timer's up, you can then test your fragrance oil blends.

From here, you'll be able to identify what works, what notes you need to change, and if you've achieved the effect you're looking for.

The Bottom Blend: Blending Oils Is an Amazing Art Form, and It's Something You Can Do On Your Own

Now that you know the basic steps on creating the perfect diffuser oil blends, you'll be able to come up with unique and impressive scents for your home.

You don't need a wide selection of fragrance oils to begin your blending journey. All you need is a few bottles, start to experiment, see what you come up with, and branch out to create fantastic scents.
